class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\">[1] meeting in Madrid at the International Open Data Conference, have sent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.access-info.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Letter-to-Spanish-Government-IODC.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">a letter to the Spanish government<\/a> expressing serious concerns about levels of transparency in Spain.<\/p>\n<p>Welcoming the hosting of the IODC by the Spanish government and some recent advances, the organisations noted that there is a critical need to improve open data and open government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>We are in a country where the government, surreal as it sounds, is litigating against the Transparency Council to resist publishing documents related to the Open Government Partnership<\/em>,\u201d said Helen Darbishire, Executive Director of Access Info Europe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>In Spain, there is a serious gap between talking about transparency and doing it<\/em>,\u201d added Darbishire.<br \/>\nSpecifically, the groups called for:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #e3220e;\"><strong>\u00bb<\/strong><\/span> Recognition of a genuine right of access to information, along with improving the access to information law and giving greater powers to the oversight body (Transparency Council)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #e3220e;\"><strong>\u00bb<\/strong><\/span> Full implementation of open data across government, including by adopting the International Open Data Charter and the Open Contracting Data Standard, as many other European countries have done.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #e3220e;\"><strong>\u00bb<\/strong><\/span> A truly open public corporate register and an open and public register of the beneficial owners of companies: The Spanish company register should be released as open data: free of charge to access, complete, downloadable in bulk, and open licensed by default.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #e3220e;\"><strong>\u00bb<\/strong><\/span> Transparency and civil society engagement in the Open Government Partnership, including the government dropping its legal challenge to making open documents related to the OGP.<\/p>\n<p>The letter has been sent to Vice President Soraya S\u00e1enz de Santamar\u00eda and Minister of Industry
