{"id":29470,"date":"2017-09-14T14:03:58","date_gmt":"2017-09-14T12:03:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.access-info.org\/?p=29470"},"modified":"2018-11-13T10:03:18","modified_gmt":"2018-11-13T09:03:18","slug":"eu-commissioners-travel-expenses-to-be-published-proactively-every-two-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.access-info.org\/es\/2017-09-14\/eu-commissioners-travel-expenses-to-be-published-proactively-every-two-months\/","title":{"rendered":"EU Commissioners\u2019 travel expenses to be published proactively every two months"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Madrid, 14 September 2017<\/em> &#8211; Access Info today cautiously welcomed draft changes to the Code of Conduct for EU Commissioners <a href=\"http:\/\/europa.eu\/rapid\/press-release_IP-17-3167_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> yesterday by the EU, which will require the proactive publication of travel expenses every two months.<\/p>\n<p>The pro-transparency organisation, which, with the support of 120 citizens from across Europe, has been campaigning for access to the Commissioners\u2019 travel expenses, noted that the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/sites\/info\/files\/draft-code-of-conduct-for-commissioners-2017_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">draft text of the Code<\/a> contains nothing on the precise data to be made public.<\/p>\n<p>Access Info has called for more specificities. \u201c<em>The devil is in the detail. A truly transparent system will provide citizens with enough detail for them to understand where and how taxpayers\u2019 money is spent on travel, accommodation, and other costs, and judge for themselves whether it is being spent appropriately<\/em>,\u201d stated Andreas Pavlou, campaigner and researcher at Access Info Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The new draft rules, laid out in Article 6.2 of the Code, would cover all missions undertaken by Commissioners unless publication of the information would undermine the protection of the public interest as regards public security, defence and military matters, international relations or the financial, monetary or economic policy of the Union or a Member State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>It is essential the Commission interpret any restrictions to transparency of their expenses very narrowly.
