This investigative series sheds light on the alarming scale of welfare surveillance and automated decision-making systems across six European countries. The series was produced in collaboration with partners including WIRED, Vers Beton, Le Monde, El Confidencial, Svenske Dagbladet, Follow The Money, Argos, and OpenRotterdam, highlighting the urgent need for transparency in algorithmic governance.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Altreconomia &#8211; \u00a0 Investigating Repatriation Detention Centres in Italy<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the Italian Freedom of Information Law, Altreconomia accessed documents revealing disturbing practices within Italy\u2019s Repatriation Detention Centres. Their investigation uncovered the abuse of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/altreconomia.it\/rinchiusi-e-sedati-labuso-quotidiano-di-psicofarmaci-nei-cpr-italiani\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> psychotropic drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to keep detainees calm,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/altreconomia.it\/inchiesta-sul-gestore-del-cpr-di-milano-tra-falsi-protocolli-e-servizi-non-erogati\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> inadequate services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/altreconomia.it\/le-prefetture-non-controllano-i-cpr-inchiesta-su-appalti-e-gestione\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fraudulent contracts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the management of the centres. These revelations contributed to initiating a formal investigation by Milan&#8217;s public prosecutor, leading to the seizure of the company responsible for managing the detention centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Eleanor Shaikh &#8211;<\/strong> <\/span><b>Supporting victims of the UK Post Office Horizon scandal<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eleanor Shaikh, a dedicated citizen advocate, utilised the UK Freedom of Information Law to help vindicate Sub-Postmasters caught in the UK Post Office Horizon scandal, where more than 900 sub-postmasters were wrongly prosecuted for stealing because of incorrect information from the Horizon computer system. Shaikh has gained access to important documents used to support victims, including the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2024\/03\/31\/post-office-buried-report-could-have-saved-sub-postmasters\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2016 Swift Review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Post Office guidance which used deeply<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-65730464\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offensive racial identification codes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for sub-postmasters under investigation. The released documents were picked up by various media outlets and laid the foundation for Eleanor\u2019s report \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jfsa.org.uk\/uploads\/5\/4\/3\/1\/54312921\/origins_of_a_disaster_-_eleanor_shaikh.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Origins of a Disaster<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Next steps<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The three finalists will now be assessed by the Evaluation Committee, which is made of members of Access Info\u2019s Board of Directors and International Advisory Board, comprising geographical and gender Muravjovas<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u201cAt this time in the history of civil and human rights in Europe, it is important to publicly recognise the people and organisations that use the right of access to information as a tool to defend human rights, democracy, the planet and as an anti-corruption tool,\u201d<\/em> said Carlos Cordero. <em>\u201cCongratulations and thanks to all those who have submitted nominations for the Access Info Impact Award\u201d.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u201cThe Committee was impressed at the range and quality of the nominations from across Europe,\u201d<\/em> said Carole Ewart. <em>\u201cWe acknowledge the perils people still face when using their right to request information and the positive impact that information disclosure brings to the public interest\u201d.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Evaluation Committee will assess the finalists based on the following criteria:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tangible Impact<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Achievements that have positively affected disadvantaged or marginalised groups.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Inspiration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Encouraging others to exercise their right to access information.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Adaptability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Overcoming obstacles to secure access to crucial information.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Collaboration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Partnering with individuals, organisations, or communities to amplify the impact of their work.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sustainability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Ensuring long-lasting outcomes and continued benefit from the information obtained.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The winner will be announced on Friday 27<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> September, ahead of International Right to Know Day. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The winning candidate will be invited to speak at the Open Government Partnership Summit 2025 in
