OUR CAMPAIGN TO MAKE TRANSPARENT THE TRAVEL EXPENSES OF
EU COMMISSIONERS

Citizens have a right to know how public funds are spent, yet until recently the travel costs
for official trips by EU Commissioners was not public.

Access Info has battled for years to get access to this information, including with numerous FOI requests,
litigation, and a wide public campaign that raised media interest EU-wide.

Finally, in September 2017, the European Commission announced changes to the Code of Conduct
that will require all Commissioners to proactively publish their travel expenses every
two months – an important step for transparency and accountability in the EU!

Here’s the story of how we got there, and what still needs to be done.

THE REQUEST CAMPAIGN: AS IT HAPPENED

  • Step 1 > Requesters selected a Commissioner and time period.

  • Step 2 > They clicked on the ‘Submit!’ button to make the request.

  • Step 3 > They were sent to AsktheEU.org where they only needed to enter their name and address in the prewritten request.

  • Step 4 > They clicked ‘Send’ (and were asked to log in or create an account).

  • Step 5 > And their requests were off!
